MY LIFE
Where It All Began
I grew up in a home shaped by addiction, violence, and fear. Even as a child, I knew something wasn’t right. I couldn’t explain it because I didn’t have the words. What I did learn was how to stay quiet, not ask questions, and pay attention to what was happening around me. That was how I learned to get through it.
As I got older, I became curious about why certain experiences stay with us. Why some moments pass, while others seem to linger. Why we can move forward with our lives and still find ourselves affected by things that happened years before.
Looking back, I think that curiosity is part of what led me into nursing.
For nearly forty years, I sat beside people during some of the most difficult times of their lives. I witnessed fear, loss, uncertainty, courage, and hope. Sometimes all at once. What stayed with me most wasn’t the illness or the diagnosis. It was the person sitting in front of me.
What I saw, over and over, was how deeply people needed to feel seen. To feel understood. To know that someone genuinely cared.
Over time, life taught me some of those same lessons. I’ve experienced loss, heartbreak, difficult relationships, estrangement, and the quiet grief that can come from accepting that some things simply won’t be what we hoped they would be.
